Common Side Effects of Chiropractic Care
Whenever you receive medical treatment for the first time, you should ask about the side effects. A lot of people are nervous about chiropractic care because they’ve watched online videos and believe them to be painful. After all, the popping sounds can be alarming. The truth is that a chiropractic adjustment should not be painful.
The majority of people feel more energy after an adjustment. They may be able to do their daily chores without any trouble. However, there are a few side effects that you might experience after an adjustment.
Soreness and Fatigue
Only a minority of patients experience negative side effects. You may feel discomfort, muscle soreness, or pain. Your muscles may not have worked properly in many years. Once your spine is in alignment, those muscles have to work again. Since they are weak, you may be prone to muscle soreness or fatigue. Before the adjustment, your nerves may have been compressed, which can cause any injuries to go undetected. After the adjustment, it may feel like those injuries are coming to life.
About 20% of all patients who undergo a chiropractic adjustment experience a condition called “toxic release.” At first, this might sound like a scary or negative side effect, but it isn’t. The symptoms associated with toxic release include:
- Tight muscles
Before you had your alignment, your nervous system may have been jammed due to subluxations. When you get the adjustment, your nerves can work at their optimal level again. If you haven’t had optimal use of your nervous system, your body has to adjust. It may become more fatigued as it adjusts. There is nothing to worry about when it comes to toxic release. The symptoms will likely only last a few days.
Serious Side Effects
If you research chiropractic side effects, you may find cases of brain bleeding, strokes, or headaches. The problem with these claims is that there is very little evidence on these rare side effects. Most people use these examples for shock value. Chiropractors have extensive training and scientific education that makes serious side effects unlikely.
If you’re worried about any of the side effects of a chiropractic adjustment, consider setting up a consultation with a chiropractor, like a chiropractor from AmeriWell Clinics. He or she can explain the risks and the benefits so that you can weigh out which decision is right for you. Keep in mind that most side effects are mild and extreme side effects are rare.
